Japanese Kurinuki Technique Workshop: Art of hollowing and adding textures

 Teacher: Yuki Watanabe

Kurinuki is a Japanese traditional handbuilding technique where you hollow and sculpt clay from a solid block to create functional ceramic pieces that celebrate natural forms and landscape-inspired textures. In this immersive workshop, we will explore diverse forms through the kurinuki method, including planters (kokedama, bonsai), vases, and cups. You’ll also get to make your own mini kokedama. This experience is perfect for potters of all levels eager to explore unique textural possibilities of clay and Japanese aesthetics.

What’s included:

-     Kurinuki tools imported from Japan

-     Kokedama materials

-     Cone 5/6 clay

-     Bisque firing (for finished pieces)

What to bring:

-     Basic pottery tools (sponge, shaping/trimming tools)

-     A small plant for kokedama

-     Lunch
