Join us for an exciting two-day workshop where you can dive into the ancient and versatile technique of pit firing! This hands-on experience will teach you to prepare and fire your ceramic pieces using time-honored methods and a variety of combustible materials.

Don't have access to a studio to make your pots? No worries—this workshop includes access to Dusted and Blue, where you can handbuild or throw your pieces specifically for the workshop. Check below for more details!

What to Expect:

Day 1: Preparation and Technique

• When: Saturday, June 21st, 4-6pm

• Where: Dusted and Blue studio

• Details: Bring your unfired (greenware) pieces to the studio (up to 5 pieces, no larger than 6 inches each). Under expert guidance, you'll learn two essential techniques to prepare your work: burnishing and terra sigillata. We'll then bisque fire your pieces to Cone 010.

• If you are prepared and complete the preparation during this workshop, you can leave your pieces at Dusted and Blue for the bisque firing.

• **If you do not have pieces ready for the first day, don't fret! There's still time to make pieces between now and the pit fire. Please attend the Day 1 workshops in order to watch the demos on how to prepare your pieces.

Day 2: Pit Firing

• When:Saturday July 19th, 8am-5pm - firing is done (estimated around 5pm, sometimes we are done earlier)

• Where: Ocean Beach Pits

• Details: Spend the day at the beach preparing the pit, loading pots, firing off the pit, tending to the pit fire. While we wait for the firing process, we’ll enjoy lunch together. By the end of the day, you'll take home your beautifully fired pieces.

Due to “Spare the Air” days in San Francisco, the Pit fire date may change. Because of this risk, we have planned backup dates for the pitfire. Please make sure you can attend all the backup dates listed in addition to the scheduled date. Please note, If you cannot make the backup dates, we cannot offer any refunds or partial refunds, but we can fire your pieces for you.

  • Open studio hours are Saturday and Sunday between 12-5pm

• Firing Limit:

  • Each participant can fire up to 5-6 pieces, each no larger than 6 inches

Important Notes:

• Bisque Firing:

  • Pieces should be bisqued to cone 010 before Day 2. You can bisque on your own or at Dusted and Blue (included in the workshop price). Drop off your completely dry pieces by, Saturday, July 5th between 12-5pm

• Weather and Air Quality:

  • The pit firing date may change due to weather conditions or if it coincides with a Spare the Air day in San Francisco, when wood burning is restricted. Refunds are not offered if workshop is moved due to the weather. Please make sure you can attend all the back up dates listed above.
